The global Industrial Heat Transfer Oil market was valued at US$ 2075 million in 2025 and is anticipated to reach US$ 3237 million by 2032, witnessing a CAGR of 6.7% during the forecast period 2026-2032.
Global sales of industrial heat transfer oil reached 505,800 tons in 2024, with an average selling price of US$3,882 per ton.
Industrial heat transfer oil (also known as heat carrier oil) refers to industrial media oils based on high-boiling-point, high-thermal-stability mineral or synthetic oils, specifically designed for indirect heat transfer in liquid or gas phases. It can provide a stable heat source of 200–400℃ at atmospheric or low pressure, featuring uniform heat transfer, high temperature control accuracy, low vapor pressure, and resistance to coking, making it a core heat medium replacing traditional steam boilers.
Industrial heat transfer oils are produced via two main raw material routes: "mineral" and "synthetic." Mineral-based oils account for over 70% of the market, primarily using petroleum vacuum distillate (a mixture of alkanes and cycloalkanes), with only 0.5%–2% antioxidant added. Raw materials are readily available and inexpensive, with a cost of approximately 9,000–11,000 RMB per ton. Synthetic oils start with chemical monomers such as benzene, naphthalene, biphenyl, and olefins, and are produced through alkylation, hydrogenation, or sulfonation to obtain base oils such as alkylbenzenes, alkylnaphthalenes, and hydrogenated terphenyls. These are then compounded with high-temperature antioxidants, pour point depressants, and metal passivation additives. Base oils account for >90% of the total cost, with higher raw material prices and the need for deep distillation. The cost per ton is 20,000–40,000 RMB, with raw material costs accounting for 60%–65%, and the remainder for hydrogenation energy consumption, catalysts, and waste treatment costs.
